Over two-thirds of the 176 countries and territories in this year's index fall below the midpoint of our scale of 0 (highly corrupt) to 100 (very clean). The global average score is a paltry 43, indicating endemic corruption in a country's public sector.

The Top-Five Causes of Death Strike Rural Residents at a Higher Rate

Rural residents are more likely than metropolitan residents to die prematurely form cancer, respiratory disease, and the other most common causes of death, a Centers for Disease Control report says. The rate of premature death from unintentional injuries was 50% higher in nonmetropolitan areas from 1999 to 2014, the report said.

Many Around World Say Women's Equality is Very Important

The principle of gender equality is one that has taken root in many nations around the world. In a 2015 survey of 38 nations, majorities in all but one country (Burkina Faso) said it is somewhat or very important that women have the same rights as men in their society. And a median of 65% worldwide said these equal rights are very important.

MACDEP members are setting the stage for 2017. Thank you for your contributions to the executive and scholarship committees. In February, Pat McGlynn, Treasurer will be wrapping up the membership drive. The MSU Extension Community Development program will host University of Wyoming Extension Educators, Mary Martin and Kimberley Chapman for a Train-the-trainer event on EVOLVE, a curriculum and program for community-based leadership development. Micky Zurcher, Tara Mastel, Cody Stone, Jennifer Anderson, Katie Weaver, Mandie Reed, and Abbie Phillip will be attending. We appreciate the administrative and programmatic support for this training to aid the development of an MSU Extension Signature program, Leadership 406.
