News Reports and Resources

Changing Roles for Fathers
Pew Social Trends | READ STORY

In this report, Pew Research investigates changing opinions about what role a father should play in the family, from instilling moral values in children to generating income. These responses are compared with previous attitudes, and with views on the role of mothers.

Libraries and Museums

Atlantic Cities | READ STORY

Two interactive maps, provided by Atlantic Cities, show the nation-wide population coverage of public libraries and museums. The data shows that, despite popular conceptions concerning fast-food culture, Americans still have better access to the library than to fast food.

Rural Broadband Subscriptions

Rural broadband subscription rates are increasing faster than their urban counterparts, though rural totals still fall short of metro numbers. This is notable particularly in light of the fact that while a majority of American households subscribed to the internet by broadband connection in 2007, this benchmark was not met in rural households until 2009.

Privacy in Young America
Pew Fact Tank | READ STORY

Young Americans are less bothered by compromises to privacy when the information at hand is being used for purposes of advertising or monetization. They do, however, retain strong concerns about intrusive monitoring programs, maintaining that privacy should be protected even in lieu of investigating potential threats to national security.

Rural Joblessness Numbers
Daily Yonder | READ STORY

This report by the Daily Yonder investigates the April unemployment statistics, showing that, while rural unemployment continues to decrease, very few new rural jobs have been created, and in the most rural American counties, there are fewer jobs now than there were this time last year.

Graduate Underemployment
Atlantic Cities | READ STORY

Although 44% of recent college graduates are underemployed, this article shows that the price of education may be a more pressing issue: a period of latency separating graduation from college-level employment has been seen before; current higher-level education costs, and the burden of student debt commensurate thereto, however, have not.
