Global Water Security

The World Resource Institute has launched the new aqueduct water resource mapping tool. This brief introductory article provides information on the tool, as well as a few immediate conclusions--highlighting the scope, complexity, and immediacy of water stress--drawn from the data presented therein.

Farm Households and Tax Reform


In this report, included in the most recent edition of Amber Waves, the USDA tracks the potential influence of federal income tax reform on farm households, arguing that proposed changes to tax code could have significant effects on those operating farms, especially larger farms.

Rural Unemployment Update
Daily Yonder | READ STORY

Rural unemployment has been steadily decreasing since 2010, and this trend continued through most of 2012. The Daily Yonder observes that, though unemployment numbers vary widely between states and counties, the drop in rural and exurban unemployment came to a general halt in December of 2012.

Municipal Bankruptcy

Although many local governments continue to struggle with post-recession budget-balancing, this article claims that Chapter 9 municipal bankruptcy--often forecasted to play a major role in the new municipal landscape--is far less common than many would think.

Demand for rental housing has been forecasted to increase markedly during the next decade. The data presented in this article by The Atlantic Cities demonstrates some of the difficulties facing the U.S. housing market given this projected convergence of cross-demographic demand.

Young Adult Debt and Capital
Pew Research | READ STORY

During the recent recession, young adults incurred significantly less debt, and rid themselves of more, than did older generations. Median debt in households headed by adults younger than 35 decreased by 29% between 2007 and 2010, compared to an 8% decrease in households headed by adults over 35.

Hispanic Growth and Higher Incomes
Daily Yonder | READ STORY

The Daily Yonder reports on a new study by the Economic Research Service, showing that Hispanic populations have seen substantial growth in rural areas during the past decade, and that rural economies have benefited from this growth, seeing faster income per capita growth strongly correlated with strong increases in the size of rural Hispanic populations.



President's Corner

Our new Montana State University Community Foundation education project is off and running; we have developed an initial website and we are in the process of hiring a new Project Director. Working in collaboration with the Montana Community Foundation, and the Anaconda Local Development Corporation, and with financial assistance from USDA Rural Development, our goals are to develop and offer tools, training, and mentoring to community foundations across Montana. Stay tuned for more information about upcoming trainings and resources.

Also, the MSU Local Government Center is organizing a new webinar series titled "Community Responses to Energy Development;" download the flyer.
